Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, affecting our environment, economy, and overall well-being. Rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are driving global temperature increases, leading to shifting climate patterns worldwide.

Brampton is already experiencing the effects of climate change, and they will become more noticeable in the years ahead. While reducing emissions remains crucial, some level of warming is inevitable due to the accumulated impacts of past human-generated emissions. Based on the Climate Trends an Future Projections for the Region of Peel, the Brampton’s climate will be warmer, wetter and wilder.

Warmer, wetter, and wilder diagram

Warmer

  • Average annual temperatures will increase by 5 degrees Celsius
  • More extreme heat days with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius

Wetter

  • More precipitation, especially during the winter and spring
  • Precipitation will increase by about 100mm/year

Wilder

  • More extreme weather events (e.g. intense storms)
  • Extreme 1-day precipitation events will increase by 22%

These changes will impact our city, increasing the risk of flooding, loss of wildlife, pests and diseases (like West Nile), heat-related illnesses, power outages, and fewer winter sports. As an urban area, Brampton will feel these effects even more, especially heat and flooding.
