What's an Official Plan?

It’s the overarching plan that helps manage how Brampton grows and develops. It guides the location and type of housing, industry, offices, and shops, as well as the infrastructure needed to support a growing city – including streets, parks, transit, schools, and recreational facilities.

Why are we undertaking this project?

Our Official Plan is a legal document that must conform to, and be consistent with, provincial and regional plans.

What are some of the growth and demographic changes in Brampton since 2006?

  • The population of Brampton had increased by over 61% since 2006.
  • Brampton saw the 2nd largest increase in population among Canada’s 25 largest cities during the last census, and Brampton’s growth rate is 3 times that of the provincial average.
  • A Growth Management Report published by the City in late 2006 estimated Brampton’s population would not reach 635,000 until 2021 and not achieve 700,000 until after 2031. The same report estimated 289,000 jobs by 2021. As of 2020, Brampton’s has surpassed those population estimates by more than 10% and number of jobs by more than 25% adding over 125,000 to the workforce since 2006.
  • Less than 4% of people reported working from home in 2006.
  • Average number of people per household since 2006 have increased from 2.3 people to 3.7 persons living under one roof.
  • Percentage of immigrants in Brampton increased to 54% from 47.8% in 2006. Percentage of individuals who identified English as their mother tongue decreased from 54.9% in 2006 to 46% in 2020.
  • Seniors (65 or over) in Brampton have increased from under 34,000 (2006) to over 88,000 (2020)
  • Despite the provincial shut down of the construction industry over COVID-19 for over a month beginning in April 2020, the City conducted 147,507 building inspections compared to 126,248 over the same period last year (as of October 31st).
  • Applications for second units in Brampton surpassed 2019’s total on October 16th, 2020. Second unit applications have increased 900% since 2015.
