The Brampton Arts Organization (BAO) is a unique organization focused on growing, celebrating, advocating for and connecting the creative sector by offering a range of programs, services and resources. We are a key partner in delivering the City of Brampton's ambitious vision for the arts, culture and creative industries as articulated in the City's strategic vision and Culture Master Plan. Our focus is to incubate, grow, celebrate, advocate for and connect the sector through an innovative and forward-thinking range of programs, services and resources that we have offered since 2021.

We are seeking one (1) individual to join our Board of Directors to fill the following key role:
Treasurer and Finance
As Treasurer it is your responsibility to oversee the financial affairs and wellbeing of the organization while working closely with the Board, Executive Director and finance supports (staff and external bookkeeper) to develop and monitor budget, ensure accurate financial tracking and recording is maintained, coordinate with financial institutions and the CRA as needed, and provide regular financial updates to the Board. You ensure compliance with financial and governmental regulations and best practices, while keeping your finger on the pulse of the organization's financial health and advising the Board and staff on strategic decisions to ensure sustainability and our ability to deliver on our mission.
The responsibilities for the Board of Directors, with the Executive Director include overseeing the strategic and operational goals of the organization, building key relationships with the local arts and culture community, working with the City and council to negotiate resources and report on achievements and progress, and follow the necessary financial, legal and governance processes.

Specific Role and Area of Expertise We Require
A familiarity with the larger ceative community in Brampton and the GTA, and previous board experience are considered a significant asset. We strongly encourage the applications of local practicing artists and creatives and entrepreneurs, and individuals across ethno-cultural backgrounds and experiences in the arts, cultural and creative industry sector.
Please note: as is the norm in nonprofit governance, board directors cannot be financially compensated for their board service - therefore this is a VOLUNTEER position.
Time Commitment and Support
The Brampton Arts Organization Board of Directors is an engaged group, with each member expected to attend 12 monthly virtual meetings per year, proactively participate in Board work and committees between meetings and commit to serving a three-year term. You can expect to volunteer approximately 4-5 hours per month as part of your role, while additionally attending optional BAO events and programs.
We recognize that is a significant commitment and will work with selected members to address scheduling concerns related to cultural/religious observances, health or access needs. BAO staff provide administrative support to the Board of Directors on a variety of tasks as part of a collaborative, team effort across BAO.

Application and Selection Process:
The selection panel will prioritize applicants who self-identify as belonging to one (or more) of the following groups: (Black, Indigenous, Persons of Colour, Deaf Persons, Persons with Disabilities and Persons Living with Mental Illness, 2SLGBTQIAP). We strongly encourage applications from these communities and will accommodate applicants with a disability during our process per the Ontario Human Rights Code guidelines and other applicable legislation.
This process is part of a commitment to anti-oppressive practices, equity and inclusion at the newly formed Brampton Arts Organization within our organization and across our upcoming programs, services, and offerings. As a member of the Board, attendance at various workshops and information sessions including Anti-Oppression and Accessibility training will be a mandatory requirement.
Expectations for all Board Members include:
- Regular attendance at all monthly Board meetings, along with a commitment to actively participate in Board work and additional committees as developed.
- Being an active, informed and engaged participant in Board matters including preparing for meetings, reviewing, and commenting on minutes and reports, attending BAO events and training exercises and local community partner events.
- Familiarizing yourself with the activities of the organization and the larger creative community in Brampton and neighboring municipalities, while also building a strong working relationship with fellow Board members and Staff.
- Participation in fundraising for the organization, and volunteering time to assist at programs and events.
- Acting as active ambassadors for the Brampton Arts Organization, promoting the values and work of the organization.

The recruitment selection committee includes the current Board Chair and an additional board member, Senior Program Lead and a senior staff member from the Culture department at the City of Brampton who will be conducting virtual interviews in the 4-6 weeks following the application deadline. Only candidates selected for an interview and to move forward in the next phase of the process will be contacted.
