​​​​​​​On December 9, 2020 Council adopted By-law 259-2020 to amend the parking requirements for some residential, commercial, and office uses throughout the City. The purpose is to add bicycle parking space requirements and maximum surface parking requirements for an apartment dwelling in the Central Area, and to provide a permanent parking exemption for commercial and office uses in the downtown. The aim is to manage parking in a responsible manner, which includes promoting sustainable forms of development and placing more emphasis on utilizing transit and active transportation opportunities.

On March 24, 2021, Council adopted By-Law ​45-2021​ to amend parking standards in the Downtown, Central Area and Hurontario-Main Corridor. The purpose is to eliminate minimum parking requirements for any use, except for the visitor parking space requirements and the exception uses listed below:

  • Parking for a single detached, semi-detached, duplex, triplex, double duplex, street townhouse dwelling, two-unit dwellings, lodging houses and senior citizen residences shall be provided in accordance with the Zoning By-law;
  • To require a visitor parking rate of 0.20 parking spaces per dwelling unit for an apartment dwelling, a multiple residential dwelling and a townhouse dwelling, without a private garage/driveway; and,
  • To add surface parking and bicycle parking requirements for an apartment dwelling.
