Why was the dome installed?
A new, weather-proof dome has been built over one outdoor field to allow for year-round use. The dome will cover the field from November to April each year. A pavilion has also been constructed near the dome to provide washroom and change room facilities to players. The dome has been built to meet growing demand for user ship outside of the traditional spring/summer playing season. Artificial turf has been installed on both fields, which reduces rain closures and extends the playing season, as well as making the field suitable for a variety of sports. The new installation also addresses a current lack of space across the city and supports an increase in turf field usage by City of Brampton programs and Youth Affiliates.
How big is the dome?
The dome measures 405 feet by 250 feet (124 meters by 77 meters), which totals 101,250 square feet or 9,550 square meters. The highest point of the of the dome is 75 feet (23 meters), which is almost seven storeys high.
What is the dome used for?
The dome and turf fields can be used for a variety of sports, including soccer, ultimate Frisbee, cricket, football, and lacrosse.
What facilities are available in the dome?
Two lit artificial turf playing fields. One of the pitches is augmented with an air-supported fabric structure (‘bubble’) to support winter play.
- A track within the bubbled field to accommodate indoor track training.
- A fieldhouse/pavillion to accommodate washrooms, change rooms and basic mechanical systems.
- Associated park improvements (fencing and pathways).
Is the dome available for rentals?
The dome is available for rentals for the 2021 season.
Is the dome climate controlled?
The dome is seasonal and will be up from November – April. During the winter months it will be heated, internal temperature will be approximately 18 degrees Celsius. The dome does not have air conditioning.
How does this tie into the Recreation and Parks Master Plan?
The goal was to incorporate the following recommendations from the Master Plan into the Save Max Sports Centre Dome Turf project:
- One-stop convenience to residents
- Flexible, multi-use, multi-generational, and multi-seasonal facilities
- Youth-Friendly, Age-Friendly, Sport-Friendly design principles
- Need for gymnasiums and large multi-purpose halls throughout City
The Parks and Recreation Master Plan concluded 18 months of consultations with the public, stakeholders, partnering public agencies, City Council and staff.
