BRAMPTON, ON: On Friday, July 22, construction of the skating trail at Chinguacousy Park reached its peak. Starting at 11 pm, the ‘big pour at Ching Park’ saw 3 million pounds of concrete poured continuously by 57 people using three pump trucks, nine power trowels and 58 truckloads of concrete. The ‘pour’, which was expected to take 24 hours, was completed in only nine hours as more workers were called in to take advantage of the weather conditions.
Here are some cool facts of the big pour:
• 9 hours of continuous pouring
• 60 people involved; including 45 workers, 12 truck drivers, and 3 project engineers
• 58 truckloads of concrete
• 3 million pounds of concrete; including skating trail and surrounding curb
• Two 65 m pump trucks (this is the biggest truck used in Canada for construction, next to the
101 m truck used for mega projects such as dams)
• One 45 m pump truck
• 9 power trowels used simultaneously to ‘smooth’ the concrete during the pour

Current status:
Large rolls of white plastic tarp cover the rink and fresh water is constantly applied to keep the concrete cool, help it set and cure properly, and prevent cracking. The covers will be left on for a week and then the site will be evaluated for next steps.
This unique project is the first of its kind in Brampton. Bringing the community together, it will be a multi-season, multi-use facility that will provide residents greater access to fun and healthy activities. Outdoor skating is a big part of Canada’s heritage and a great way to keep active and fit. Designed in the shape of an irregular ‘canal’ style skating trail, it will feature bends that will be configured for skaters with different abilities without disturbing the general flow of skaters. There will also be specially designed winter seating and warming areas along the trail.
During the summer months, the ‘canal’ will become a large, shallow reflective pool that will allow some water play as well. The canal can also be drained to provide a large plaza to support summer outdoor events, performances and other community gatherings.
This multi-use facility is expected to be completed by Fall 2016. Great things are happening in Brampton, stay tuned!
