Brampton Urban Design Awards 2023

The Brampton Urban Design Awards celebrate achievements in design, architecture and landscape architecture. These awards, given out every two years, recognize the creativity and excellence of those who are working to fill Brampton with innovative, high-quality environments.

Categories:

Projects are submitted in one of eight categories:

Building - Residential, Commercial, Institutional, Industrial/Employment, Mixed-use
Heritage Restoration - In-situ Renovation, Restoration, Adaptive Reuse
New Landscape - Public Space, Park, Stormwater Pond, Valley, Streetscape, Planting Feature
New Neighbourhood - 50 Acres or more with defined character, Centre, edges and recognition elements
Concept or Plan - City-endorsed Master Plans, Projects, Studies
Healthy and Sustainable Development – Sustainable Greenfield Development, Infill, Transit-oriented/Transit-supportive Design, Green Technology
Project Marketing - Materials promoting high-quality projects in Brampton (brochures, video/web-based presentations, sales pavilions)

In addition, the People’s Choice Award is presented to a project selected by the public from a group of exceptional projects developed or planned in the two years prior to the award year.

About the Awards

The Brampton Urban Design Awards is a biennial awards program that celebrates urban design excellence in the city of Brampton and acknowledge significant contributions made by city-builders, urban designers, architects, landscape architects, artists and design students. These awards promote and celebrate innovation, creativity, and design excellence in the delivery of high-quality, sustainable, and inclusive urban-built environments in Brampton.

This year the program will focus on new socio-economic themes alongside best practice design standards. Under the theme ‘Inclusivity – By Design’, the 2023 Brampton Urban Design Awards will address themes of Active Design, Aging Population, Sustainability, Accessibility, Safety, Equity, Health and Wellbeing.

Schedule and Event

Friday, April 14, 2023: Submissions Open
Entries to the 2023 Urban Design Awards officially open. Submit your projects online.
Friday, June 23, 2023, 11:59pm EST: Submissions Deadline
Last day to submit entries to the 2023 Urban Design Awards.
July 10, 2023: People’s Choice Voting Opens
Public Voting for People’s Choice Award officially opens. Individuals are invited to vote for projects from the entire submission pool.
August 14, 2023: People’s Choice Voting Closes
Last day to submit votes for People’s Choice Award.
October 2023: Winners Announced
A City-Building Gala event will be held to celebrate all winning entries in October.
December 2023: Exhibition and Inclusivity – By Design Yearbook
Publication of a Yearbook highlighting all award winners. *Exact date to be confirmed.

Award Categories

Visions, Masterplans and Large Places Design
Visions for the city – including studies and masterplans for large parks, area/district plans, neighbourhood plans, subdivisions, industrial parks, campus plans, etc. that contribute to Brampton’s Vision and objectives.
Building Design - Public
Precedent-setting design of an individual or a composition of buildings of all scales with the primary function to serve and/or is accessible by the public, including but not limited to educational, recreational, cultural and civic buildings.
Building Design - Private
Precedent-setting design of individual or composition of buildings of all scales that demonstrates contributions to place-making, urban life and activity, including but not limited to residential, commercial and mixed-use buildings.
Heritage Restoration Design
Innovative design in the restoration, conservation, or reuse of built heritage.
Public Realm, Public Space and Landscape Design
Engaging design that elevates the dialogue among place, people and landscape.
Element Design
Small-scale installation that contributes to place making, such as the design of stand-alone objects, art installations, site furniture, entryways, temporary activations, fences.
Student Design Project
Design project by students from universities, colleges, or high schools.

Judging Criteria

Inclusive By Design
Design that enables people of all backgrounds and abilities while addressing accessibility, age, economic situation, race, and more.
Sustainability
Design that demonstrates a significant contribution to the sustainable performance of new developments and application of the Sustainable New Communities Program.
Execution
Project that skillfully moves designs into reality and demonstrates high quality of construction materials.
Innovation
Design that responds creatively to program requirements and sets precedent for projects of its type.
Integration
Design that successfully integrates with existing and planned surrounding urban fabric and respects the area’s character.
Complete Community
Design that provides equal access to needed services and ensures that all opportunities which make urban life liveable, healthy, and enjoyable are available to all.
Citywide Significance
Design that realises the City’s 2040 Vision and design objectives, while supports equity, sustainability, resiliency, accessibility, integration, and preservation of heritage resources.

Type of Awards

The Brampton Urban Design Awards recognize three awards of distinction. The number of awards bestowed in each category, if any, is at the discretion of the jury.

Awards of Excellence

Given to projects that demonstrate excellence across all judging criteria.

Awards of Merit

Given to projects that demonstrate excellence across multiple judging criteria.

Healthy by Design

Given to projects that exemplify the six Healthy Development Core Elements.

Two projects will be selected from the entire body of submissions for special recognition in the following areas:

People's Choice Award

Selected by the residents of Brampton.

Best Overall Project

For the best overall design project in advancing Brampton’s 2040 Vision.

Jury

The City By-Design Award is juried by a panel of Urban Visionaries. It is comprised of design industry experts from across Canada and internationally in the fields of Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Planning.
