Frequently Asked Questions Body Content Why is the City offering open data?As part of an effort to create a better informed public, enhance customer service, improve efficiencies and benefit the community.Will personal information be at risk?The City is committed to the protection of personal information, in accordance with the freedom of information and privacy laws. Only public information will be released.Will all City data be released?No - some data are subject to confidentiality and privacy laws and some are subject to legal contracts and agreements with other parties that prevent us from sharing the data. This information will remain as internal use only.How are datasets selected?The initial datasets consist of information that is in an easily exported format and free from privacy restrictions such as Transit datasets. Subsequent releases will meet the same standards. Priority is given to information already being collected for internal purposes or those found to be in high demand. What file formats are available?At this time we have offered the data in XLS and GTFS format.How regularly is the data updated? Operating divisions and program areas within the City manage their own data and update them as required to meet business needs. Critical datasets are maintained on an ongoing basis as information changes while others are updated on a routine schedule.Will I be notified of updates? Each data page contains information on the date of the last edit.Can I submit data corrections or suggestions?Yes, contact us at 311@brampton.ca with complete details. We do not provide user support for the data.Why is a particular dataset not available yet, and when will it be?There may be reasons of confidentiality that prevent releases. There are also thousands of possible datasets and resolving presentation formats and privacy concerns takes time. The City’s Open Data project has been designed as a multi-phased approach. The first phase included the release of readily available datasets that were free of privacy concerns and a beta launch of the website.Will more public data become available in the future?Yes. The City will continue to identify and make available new datasets as appropriate.
